Brisbane is a city where racial discrimination and institutionalized poverty persist. The city’s aging population has a lot to worry about, from finding a place to live to navigating a costly health care system.

Some researchers claim that significant extension of the human lifespan will be possible soon. However, little research has been done into community attitudes to this technology.

Queen’s Wharf Brisbane (QWB)

QWB is a major development that is transforming Brisbane’s historic heart. The massive project combines state-of-the-art contemporary architecture with repurposed heritage buildings and public spaces. The result is a unique destination that celebrates the city’s subtropical climate, outdoor river-city lifestyle and diverse cultural history. The community project is expected to generate thousands of construction and operational jobs, as well as significant economic benefits for the local and state economy.

The multibillion-dollar casino and entertainment complex is currently under construction on both sides of William Street in downtown Brisbane. The project will include 50 new bars and restaurants, four world-class hotels, a casino and the equivalent of 12 football fields of public space.

In addition, the project will feature a unique arc building that houses a sky deck 100 metres above the street. It will also include a new pedestrian bridge crossing the river to South Bank, as well as new retail, residential and public spaces. The project is being developed by Destination Brisbane Consortium, a joint venture between Star and its Hong Kong-listed partners Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium.

However, the company has been facing delays due to bad weather and the pandemic. In addition, it has recently been accused of not conducting a proper impact study for the project. This has led to a lawsuit by real estate developer Multiplex Constructions Qld Ltd.

James Cook University Brisbane (JCUB)

Parks Recreation

Featuring a variety of well-manicured parks and recreation facilities, Brisbane is a top choice for families to stay active. The City Council maintains more than 2180 parks including pocket, district and regional parks, three botanic gardens and bushland reserves. Many Brisbane parks host free community events for all ages and are perfect spots for picnics or outdoor activities.

Amy Poehler’s starring role in Parks and Recreation has helped the show stand out from other NBC sitcoms. This comedy shows the ups and downs of small-town government politics, using its main character as a microcosm for American politicians in general. Though the show has its fair share of cynical characters, there is also a wholesome optimism that makes it unique in modern television.

Noise Action Plan for Brisbane

Excessive flight noise from the privately-owned Brisbane Airport has been a major problem for many residents since the new parallel runway opened in July 2020. The community has demanded caps on the number of flights per hour and a curfew at night, which are reasonable demands that have been implemented at other airports around the world. However, BAC have refused to implement these measures as they would impact their profits.

The Federal Government has recently established the Brisbane Airport Community Airspace Advisory Board to better manage aircraft noise issues, with local residents encouraged to participate in the upcoming feedback sessions. This independent body will be led by an Independent Chair, Ron Brent, who has decades of experience in aviation policy and law, including as Australia’s first aircraft noise ombudsman.

The Federal Government will also be providing a $2 million grant to the Brisbane Airport Community Airspace Management Group to develop lower impact alternatives for aircraft noise mitigation strategies. This will include an Integrated Noise Management Plan and a broader approach to flight path planning. It will also explore the use of Simultaneous Opposite Direction Runway Operations (SODPROPS) at night, which can reduce the impact on communities by moving aircraft away from populated areas. This is a welcome measure, but it does not address the issue of excessive flight noise, which remains a significant concern for Brisbane residents.
